GOVERNMENT
Council-members:
Wetumpka City Council:
The City of Wetumpka operates under Alabama’s Mayor-Council form of government. Under this form, the Executive and Legislative branches are not two distinct entities. The Mayor is the chief executive officer and is also a member of and presides over the Council. The Mayor has one vote and is without the power to veto.
The Council is the legislative branch of city government and enacts ordinances, adopts budgets, and determines policies for the City. The Council elects a Mayor Pro Tempore who presides at meetings, or in other capacities, in the absence of the Mayor. Council actions can take the form of ordinances and resolutions . Councilmen are elected every four years and must reside in the district they represent.
An ordinance is generally a legislative act of the Council to adopt laws, statutes and regulations for the city. An ordinance must be approved by a majority vote of the Council and must be published in the local newspaper to become official.
A resolution is generally a formal statement of decision, opinion or determination of policy adopted by the Council to exercise ministerial functions. A motion is generally a procedural action in a Council meeting, in order to formally consider resolutions or ordinances, file reports or request that certain action be taken by the administrative branch of the city. A motion requires a second and, with certain exceptions, majority approval.
We strive to provide as much information and guidance about the Mayor and City Council as possible. This includes how it works, who is responsible for what, what role it has in the community it serves and in promoting the social, economic and environmental well-being of the city as a whole.
A full description of this form of government can be found in Title 11, Code of Alabama, 1975.
Council Meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Wetumpka City Hall. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. All agenda items must be finalized with the Mayor by noon on Friday before the Monday meeting.
