Fire Department

The Wetumpka Fire Department is an ISO rated Class 3 fire department that provides services to over 20,000 residents within a 70 square mile coverage area in and  around the City of Wetumpka.  The department utilizes a combination of volunteer, part-time and full-time personnel to provide fire, EMS, and rescue services from 4 stations strategically located throughout the fire district.  Our apparatus fleet includes 6 engine companies, 2 medium rescue, 1 ladder company, 1 tanker/pumper, 3 brush units, and 1 off road rescue UTV as well as 6 boats and other dive and technical rescue trailers.  The department emphasizes public education, training and planning to ensure that our citizens and visitors are provided with the best services possible.

Our public education program focuses on the more than 3000 children who not only live within our fire district but also arrive from 7 other fire districts to attend our local schools.  Recently, our public education program has received recognition in national fire service periodicals such as Firehouse, Fire Engineering, Fire Chief, the NFPA Journal and others for our education efforts in the area of fire sprinklers.

Our dedication to training is evidenced by many of our personnel acquiring advanced certifications as instructors, inspectors and fire officers and also by the many technical certifications required to participate in our swift-water and high-angle teams.

Planning is an obvious priority of our department as a result of potential hazards such as our large school population, many government buildings, Tutwiler Prison, Jordan Dam, Elmore Community Hospital, the Coosa River, US Highway 231, historic downtown riverfront area and the Wetumpka Airport.  Additionally, the City attracts many tourists and host many events that draw large crowds to our fire district.

The department participates in the Elmore County Firefighter’s Association, works closely with the Elmore County Emergency Management Agency and has mutual aid agreements with surrounding departments in the county, particularly the neighboring fire districts of Elmore, Holtville, Titus, Byuck, Santuck, Eclectic, Emerald Mountain, and Redland.
