Animal Control (office located adjacent to Wetumpka Police Department)
The City of Wetumpka regulates ownership of domestic animals within our corporate city limits per section 10-1 through 10-30 of the Code of Ordinances. The various ordinances found in chapter 10 of the City of Wetumpka code of Ordinances are Law, have been approved by past and present mayors and members of the City Council.
The following is a paraphrased overview of a few ordinances pertaining to Animal Control:
Ordinance 89-2; Prohibits any person to hinder, molest or interfere with an authorized Animal Control Officer performing duties.
Ordinance 94-8; Gives authority to the Chief Animal Control Officer to catch and take dogs or cats running loose and transport them to the Humane Shelter. The shelter will keep them seven (7) days, and unless they are redeemed, they become property of the shelter. Humane Society of Elmore County 255 Central Plank Road, phone: 334-567-3377. Ordinance 89-2; Prohibits animal owners from allowing their dogs to bark loudly and frequently, prohibits continued meowing, barking, yelping, or howling, of any such animal which annoys or disturbs the neighbors. This ordinance also prohibits any cat owners from owning or keeping any cat that is not been given annual rabies shots. Every cat over three (3) months old shall wear a substantial, durable collar or harness with rabies tag attached as required by the Code of Alabama, 1975, 3-7A-2. A person owns or keeps a vicious cat at their own risk. If a vicious cat escapes its enclosure or injures any person outside of the enclosure, the owner shall be criminally liable whether such escape or injury occurred with or without negligence of the owner, keeper, or any other person.
Ordinance 86-2; Prohibits any dog owners from owning or keeping any dog that has not been given annual rabies shots. Every dog over three (3) months of age shall wear a substantial, durable collar or harness with rabies tag attached as required by the Code of Alabama 1975,3-7A-4. If a vicious dog escapes its enclosure or injures any person outside of the enclosure, the owner shall be criminally liable whether such escape or injury occurred with or without negligence of the owner, keeper, or any other person. The Chief Animal Control Officer, his deputies or assistants and members of the Police Departments shall have the right, for the protection of the public health, welfare, and safety, to enter upon any premises within the city for the purpose of capturing and impounding any dog or cat running at large. Inhumane treatment of animals is prohibited.
Ordinance 81-10; Prohibits any person to keep any fowl, any cow, animal of the cow kind, hog, pig, horse, mule, deer, or any other domestic farm animal, except dogs and cats within the corporate city limits of the city in any such manner as to endanger the public health or in any such manner as to constitute a public nuisance.
